This is evident in the rise of large and small law companies striving to stake out positions in commercial space ventures. This article highlights how Biglaw and boutiques are entering the final frontier.
1. How Big Law Is Adapting to the Race
According to the recent Space Foundation report, the global space economy is estimated at $613 billion, with projections to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035. This growth presents major law firms with a significant opportunity in the space exploration sector. For instance, some big law companies have announced a dedicated global space law practice to advise clients on regulatory, intellectual property, and dispute issues.
To adapt to this space race, major firms are hiring specialists with aerospace or government backgrounds and partnering with leading aerospace groups. For example, Jones Day recently hired a former NASA attorney as the head of its law group. Meanwhile, Hogan Lovells launched a Space Practice Group in conjunction with leading corporations like Airbus and Lockheed Martin. Other big firms are also investing in certification programs for their lawyers to help them acquire new knowledge on space treaties and regulations. These moves allow Biglaw to adapt its traditional legal strengths to this new context quickly.

The growth of space opportunities has contributed to the rise of boutique law firms to fill the gaps in the space sector. These firms market themselves exclusively as law specialists, offering deep, niche expertise and a more entrepreneurial approach. They also emphasize navigating the complex regime of space treaties and principles.
For instance, specialized lawyers interpret how much legacy treaties apply to modern ventures. This helps clients demonstrate compliance with the treaty’s non-appropriation principle or understand the liability convention.
The need for guides on international space law is growing. Small firms offer the much-needed flexibility in navigating this set of rules. They also have affordable subscription models that appeal to space startups and smaller law players.
Unlike in major firms, clients in boutique firms get more direct attention. That is because these companies can be very active in the space community, often participating in policy forums and working groups. While smaller in size, boutique law firms offer value by concentrating specialized knowledge and remaining agile to serve the rapidly evolving sector.

Space law is highly interdisciplinary, and firms need to hire lawyers with a hybrid skill set. Recruiting notices and career advisers emphasize that candidates must show solid legal ability with space-specific knowledge.
In practice, firms want lawyers with deep knowledge of international space law. However, knowing how spacecraft are built and launched can help them in drafting and negotiating contracts.
