I want to get that out of the way first, because people search the term expecting something that does not exist and then spend a lot of money finding out what does.

What exists is a handful of floor plans inside a big custom sleeper and two or three of them give each person their own sleeping surface with some amount of separation. That’s the honest version of a second bedroom. A curtain, a step, a wall between two berths, sometimes an actual door. Whether that’s enough depends entirely on who is riding in the truck with you and that question decides more about your satisfaction than the cabinetry finish or the TV size ever will.

The question that picks the floor plan

Bolt’s people have said this better than most of the marketing ever does and the logic is worth stealing whole. Is it a husband and wife team? Then they probably want to share one bed, so a single rear bunk with a real mattress makes sense and you spend the freed-up space on living area instead. Two drivers who are not a couple? Now you need two berths and the follow-up question matters more than anyone expects: does either one of them want to climb into an upper bunk at three in the morning after eleven hours behind the wheel? If one driver is sixty with a bad knee, the answer is no and you’re looking at side by side berths instead of stacked ones.

That’s the whole decision in one paragraph and it is startling how many people work through it backward, picking a sleeper length first and discovering the bunk arrangement afterward.

The layouts you’ll actually be offered

Rear bunk, single — one full bed across the back wall. Most living space, zero separation, right for couples and solo drivers who want room to live rather than room to sleep separately.

Upper and lower bunks — the classic team setup, most sleeping capacity per inch of sleeper and the upper is a genuine problem for anyone with mobility issues.

Side by side berths — two separate sleeping surfaces on the same level, nobody climbing. Eats more floor width and this is the closest thing to two bedrooms that exists in a truck.

Rear bed plus convertible dinette — Bolt’s patented Dine-A-Bunk is the well-known version, a rear dining booth where the table drops electrically and the cushions fold flat into a full-size bed. The pitch is that it doubles usable living space, since in a standard sleeper the bed swallows most of the floor.

That last one is the interesting compromise and the one I’d look hardest at. You get a second sleeping surface without dedicating permanent square footage to it and during the day you have somewhere to sit that is not the bed. In a 100 inch sleeper that conversion is the difference between a room and a closet with a mattress in it.

The catch and nobody selling it will lead with this, is that somebody has to convert it every night and unconvert it every morning. For a team running hard, hot-seating the truck, that’s fine because the off-driver sleeps in the rear bed anyway. For two people both trying to sleep at the same time in a parked truck, one of them is making a bed every single night. Small friction, repeated four hundred times a year.

Length is the real currency

Custom sleepers come in a range and ARI’s catalog runs from 96 inches up to 180, with 120, 132, 156 and 168 being the common middle. Every extra foot buys interior room and costs you turning radius, wheelbase and weight.

For genuine two-berth living with a bathroom, you are realistically starting around 150 inches and going up from there. Below that you can fit two people, but the second berth starts cannibalizing the kitchen, the closet or the shower. Above 168 you’re into rigs with wheelbases north of 320 inches, which changes how the truck behaves at truck stops and shipper yards in ways that matter every day.

Weight is the constraint people underestimate. A big sleeper with a generator, water tanks, batteries, appliances and a shower adds real pounds and every one of those comes off your payload. If you’re running heavy freight, the sleeper you want may cost you the loads you take. That math has to happen before the deposit, not after.

Fresh water capacity is worth asking about specifically. ARI puts a minimum of 36 gallons in their sleepers, which sounds like a lot until two people are showering daily.

Three builds worth watching right now

These are my picks based on what’s moving and what actually solves the two-berth problem, not a ranking anyone else would necessarily agree with.

Peterbilt 589 Ultra Cab with an ARI Legacy II sleeper

The 589 took over from the 389 as Peterbilt’s long-hood classic and pairing it with an ARI sleeper in the 120 to 156 inch range is the build that keeps showing up. Typical spec runs a Cummins X15 at 565 horsepower with an Eaton Endurant XD Pro 18-speed. It’s the emotional pick, honestly. Nobody buys a 589 Ultra Cab on a spreadsheet. But ARI’s RBUB configuration, rear bath with upper bunk, is the one to ask about if you need the second berth and the Ultra Cab’s extra interior room ahead of the sleeper makes the whole thing breathe better than the numbers suggest.

Western Star 49X with the 180 inch ARI Legacy II RBSD

If you want the maximum, this is it. A 180 inch sleeper on a 342 inch wheelbase with a Detroit DD16 at 600 horsepower and the RBSD layout puts the bath at the rear with a side door, which changes how the interior flows. This is the rig for people living in the truck rather than sleeping in it and I’d argue it’s the only configuration on this list where “two bedroom” stops being an exaggeration. It is also enormous and if a good chunk of your work involves tight urban docks, you already know why that’s a problem.

Freightliner Cascadia with a Bolt integrated sleeper

The practical choice and the one I’d recommend to somebody buying with their head. Bolt’s sleepers are fully integrated rather than bolt-on, meaning no rubber boot gap between cab and sleeper, which helps aerodynamics and therefore fuel. They build with aluminum structure and huck bolts, the vibration-proof fasteners used in aircraft assembly, which addresses the thing that actually ruins custom sleepers over time, everything shaking loose at 600,000 miles. The Cascadia underneath means parts and service anywhere in the country and the ship-thru approach keeps chassis work at any Freightliner dealer while the RV-side components, Onan generator, Dometic appliances, get serviced at RV shops.

Pair that with the Dine-A-Bunk and you have the two-berth setup that costs you the least in space, weight and fuel. Not the truck anyone photographs. Probably the truck that makes money.

What I don’t know

Resale on these is the part I can’t give you a confident read on. The custom sleeper market is small, buyers are specific and a build tailored precisely to your life may be exactly the thing that narrows the pool when you sell. I’ve seen used ARI trucks listed with a million miles and a rebuilt engine, which tells you the good ones stay in service a long time, but that’s not the same as knowing what yours will bring in five years. Anyone who quotes you a confident depreciation figure on a one-off custom interior is guessing.

If you take one thing from all of this, make it the bunk question. Sit down with whoever is going to be in that truck with you and answer honestly who sleeps where, who climbs what and who is making a bed every night. Get that right and a 150 inch sleeper feels generous. Get it wrong and 180 inches feels like a hallway you both live in.

Nobody builds a two bedroom super sleeper truck.
